Wayne Rooney has urged Manchester United supporters to keep on
backing their struggling team as they bid to reach the last eight of the
Champions League.
United fans came in for praise from David Moyes for the way they stuck by their team during Sunday’s 3-0 defeat
to Liverpool and, although United have lost six times at Old Trafford
this season, the supporters have not yet turned on the manager.
United meet Olympiakos on Wednesday trailing 2-0
after the first leg in Greece, and Rooney is convinced they need such
fervent support again if they are to progress to the quarterfinals.
Rooney, who had branded the Liverpool game “a nightmare,” wrote on his Facebook page:
“It was one of the worst days I’ve had in football and was hard to
take. Having said that, the fans were brilliant right until the end
under difficult circumstances so I would like to thank them for that.
“We need to move on as we have a big game on Wednesday. If the fans can
repeat an atmosphere like Sunday, then we will have a good chance of
going through. Thanks again for all your support.”
Olympiakos wrapped up the Greek title on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Panthrakikos.
