Reps seek establishment of more industries in states

To forestall a repeat of the recent immigration recruitment tragedy that killed 21 people across the country, the House of Representatives yesterday urged the Federal Government to establish an industry in each state of the federation.

It argued that the measure would help ameliorate the menace of unemployment, especially among the youth.
According to the lower chamber, on completion and commissioning of the companies, the Bureau for Public Procurement (BPP) should swing into action and sell same to interested investors.
The lawmakers further recommended that part of the funds from SURE-P, excess crude and sovereign wealth fund should be provided as seed fund, which would be recovered when the industries are sold to core investors.
Apart from that, the lower chamber also recommended that the country should embark on massive industrial revolution by adopting the turn key project model of build and sell as currently obtained in the power sector. It mandated committees on Commerce and Industry and that of Environment to relate with relevant ministries on how the recently launched revolution could leverage on the model.
The House reached this decision after adopting a motion moved by Rep Akpan Micah Umoh (PDP, Akwa Ibom), who bemoaned the immigration recruitment tragedy and blamed the “hydra-headed scourge of unemployment” as being responsible to the incident
